I was not particularly happy once my previous student started talking.
I was initially happy to see him, and did remember he struck me as a pretty decent student.
But what he was saying about his experiences in the public school system did almost nothing but push me toward Angry and starting at irritated. Once he got to corporal punishment, it was all I could do to not tell him to get out of my classroom.
Perhaps I overreacted, but I don’t think so. In fact, if I had it to do over again, I would have actually gone after him more. I would have also went after my co-teacher for inviting him.
The student is no longer a teacher. he has decided to do something else with his life. Good. Japan doesn’t need teachers like that in the classroom. The bad thing is that there are probably 1000 more just like him out in the schools now.
It was the lack of shame and remorse that touched me off.
